ACORN EDGE PAST STUBBORN
Hammersmith for cup glory
York Acorn made capital gains when they reached the second round of this season’s Coral Challenge Cup competition with a resounding 36 – 14 first round home win over London based Hammersmith Hills Hoists.
As expected York Acorn would not be at their fluent best for this early, early season encounter with pre season training only been a month old at most and their forthcoming NCL Premier season still around 8 weeks away. To make things even harder for both sides, the game was played against a biting strong wind- that at times made handling and tactical kicking difficult.
Acorn managed to get on the scoreboard first, when on 10 minutes quick hands along their three quarters allowed Acorns right winger Joel Johnson to take the final pass before expertly stepping inside the visitors cover defence to score a try which Acorn stand off Antony Chilton then converted to put Acorn into a 6-0 lead. Handling errors out wide meant Acorn missed several guilt edged opportunities to stretch their lead.
That was until the 35th minute, when Acorn prop forward Tim Stubbs crashed through several would be tacklers to score a try , after good approach play from acting half James Mountford and substitute loose forward Lewis Lord, had set up a good field position near the oppositions try line. Chilton added the extras to put Acorn into a healthier looking 12-0 lead.
Hammersmith hit back almost immediately, when on 37 minutes their excellent MOTM – acting half Luke Ferry dummied his way over from close range, for a well deserved try to which scrum half Mitchell Wilson then added a straight forward goal to , which in turn reduced Acorns lead to 12-6.
Acorns response was both quick and clinical, when with barely 30 seconds left on the clock – York Acorns MOTM, winger Luke Swales , took a quality reverse pass off Chilton in the visitors 20, before rampaging untouched through a corridor of would be tacklers to score a try under the posts. Chilton added the conversion to give Acorn an 18 – 6 lead.
If Acorn thought the second half would be 40 minutes of blue & golds dominance , they were ruefully warned about any sort of complacency – when on 44 minutes Hammersmiths highly rated full back Dane O’Hehir took a high Chilton bomb inside his own 20, before leaving Acorns right edged defence in tatters, as he stormed down that edge on his way to a fine individual try that once again saw Acorns lead cut to below double figures.
Stung by this early response from the London boys, Acorn got their game back on track within minutes, when on 49 minutes Acorns scrum half Lewis Brown created the space to put the supporting Lewis Lord over for a try near the posts. Chilton’s goal saw Acorn move into a 24-10 lead with still half an hour to go.
The game was effectively taken out of Hammersmiths reach on 59 minutes, when quality interchange play between substitute hooker Nick Speck and sub forward Jack Byrne’s ended with the latter being sent on a clear run to the try line for a try to which Chilton then goaled to put Acorn 30-10 up.
To their credit, Hammersmith refused to give up and on the back of several unnecessary penalties given needlessly away by Acorn in their own 20- Hills Hoists took full advantage of the extra possession and were rewarded on 68 minutes with an unconverted try out wide, through their lively substitute back Jordan Darkwa, that saw Acorns lead cut to 30 – 14.
Acorn had the final word on the scoreboard with a 75th minute try from scrum half Lewis Brown, who took full advantage of a 20 yard break by second rower Elliott Bulmer, who in turn drew the Hoists full back before putting the supporting Brown in for a deserved try, which Chilton converted with his 6th goal out of 6 attempts that saw York Acorn go into the hat for the second round draw following this hard earned 36 – 14 win.
