Our Story

York Acorn ARL Sports & Social Club has been based at Thanet Road since 1991; boasting outstanding facilities we are York’s Number 1 Amateur Rugby League Club.

The summer of 1973 was a significant year for amateur rugby league, what started out as conversation saw the conception of the ‘blue and gold’ rugby league team. Life was pretty tough in those early days, but the pioneers of the 70’s laid the foundations for a club that continues to thrive, now showcasing the successes of 8 Junior Teams and 2 Open Age Sides.

At The Heart Of The Community

The dream of a place of their own became a reality in 1990 when planning permission was granted. With dedication, hard work, tireless fundraising, building relations with local businesses and persistence the doors to Thanet Road opened on Saturday 19th Jan 1991; setting the precedent for future years.

As York Acorn’s Sports & Social Club continues to evolve, at the heart of the community, we promote these key values, with immense pride.

From Small Acorns Do Mighty Oaks Grow

It’s a saying that could hardly be more befitting for one of York’s biggest community clubs. York Acorn Amateur Rugby League Club, founded by the late Pete Warters and Tony Winn in 1973, were originally based at the Acorn pub in the city centre – hence the name.

Dreams are like acorns

Plant them well, tend them carefully and they will grow to be as mighty as an oak
