Acorn dig deep as Lane are Slain

York Acorn were indebted to a hat trick of trys by inform centre Ryan Gallacher

York Acorn were indebted to a hat trick of trys by inform centre Ryan Gallacher and powerful surging second half runs by props Joshua Mortimer and Tim Stubbs allied to the speeding up of the play the balls and an improved completion rate as they eventually managed to overcome a 67th minute sending off , of winger Joshua Thompson (for alleged referee abuse after he had initially been yellow carded) and a youthful, enthusiastic Castleford Lock Lane side - to register a hard fought 36 - 22 opening day home win the National Conference First Division.
The first half was a painful reminder of how not to play the game with ball in hand, if you expect to win a close fought encounter..
Far too often, Acorn were guilty of not completing their sets due mainly to losing the ball early in the tackle count - with the chief culprit being silly off loads.
A first half completion rate of 55% isn't going to win you many games and is more than likely going to see you punished by the top sides as was the case last season.
Lock Lane were the first to get on the scoreboard, when on 10 minutes they managed to create space on Acorns left wing that saw Lock Lane winger Luke Hands go in at the corner for an unconverted try and 0-4 lead.
Acorn responded almost immediately when Gallacher nipped in for his first try on 14 minutes ,when pouncing onto a Tim Elliott grubber through kick behind the Cas sides try line.
Although the try was unconverted Acorn had at least tied the scores up at 4 apiece.
Acorn continued to gain the upper hand without looking totally convincing and on 18 minutes they moved into a 10 - 4 lead when winger Josh Thompson intercepted on his own 20 meters and then stretched his long legs to race in from 80 meters out for a try to which Anthony Chilton added the extras.
Lock Lane drew level on 31 minutes following a Mix up from an Acorn scrum in their own 20.
Somehow the ball popped out on the visitors side and quick hands enabled their centre Oliver Bloomer to go in for a try to which their impressive scrum half Connor Land added the extras to , bringing the scores to parity at 10 - 10.
More misfortune befell Acorn on 38 minutes , when Land attempted to put a lofted kick into the Acorn in goal area and it was deflected by the blocking hands of Acorn centre Matthew Woods into the grateful hands of Lanes stand off Joe Willock who grounded the ball for a try which Connor Land added the extras to- giving the visitors a 10- 16 lead.
The game swung Acorns way on the back of a 20 minute period at the start of the second half, when they blitzed Lock Lane with a display full of pace and power - which saw them move into a match winning 30-16 lead.
Unlike the opening moments of the first half , Acorn started the second half well and had Lock Lane on the back foot from the off.
On 43 minutes a high up and under was clutched out of the air by Thompson who then offloaded to the supporting Gallacher who then crossed for his second try to edge Acorn closer - trailing now only 14-16.
Not for the first time during this game the conversion attempt would crash off the posts and not go over.
Acorn got their noses in front on 53 mins when acting half James Mountford went over from the acting half role for an unconverted try which put Acorn 18 - 16 in front.
Acorn now had the bit between their teeth and edged further in front on 58 minutes when the outstanding Mortimer burst clear on the half way line before racing 30 meters to then send the supporting Joe Budd over under the posts for a try which Chilton added the extras to giving Acorn a 24 - 16 lead.
On 62 minutes Acorn appeared to have sewn the game up when Elliott put Gallacher into space and he did the rest from 20 yards out, to notch his hat trick score.
Chiltons goal putting Acorn into a seemingly commanding 30-16 lead going into the final quarter.
On 65 mins quick hands out wide enabled winger Luke Hands to find space and race in for a try which Connor Land added the extras to giving Acorn only an 8 point lead at 30-22.
Then came Thompson's aberration closely followed by one or two last ditch tackles most notably by Budd on Willock when it appeared he was destined to score following a break from half way.
Finally Acorn managed to reassert themselves on 74 minutes when James Mountford made a darting break at the heart of the Lock Lane defence before sending Second rower Brandon Harris charging over for a match winning try which Chilton added the extras to - giving Acorn a morale boosting 36 - 22 home win .
Others to impress for Acorn were, the Speck brothers Hooker Nick especially in defence and substitute forward Adam who along with fellow forward Harris worked tirelessly both with and without the ball in hand to wrestle the game away from their visitors.
